College Essay
My sister Thuy came from the town of Saigon, Vietnam. There's a strong smell of fish that lingers around along with continuous locals trying to persuade you into buying something off one of their carts that they push around daily. She grew up with my brother and mother taking sponge baths outside, and sleeping on a thin straw mat because they couldn't afford a house. She moved to America at the age of 13. Beside the fact that she was born into one of the weakest countries in the world, she turned out to be one of the strongest.
I can always remember seeing her as the responsible one. Although she had a kid at the age of seventeen, and made that choice to drop out of highschool, it makes me admire her even more. Of course at first glance that doesn't sound like the most "responsible" phenomenon, but we all have our mistakes, and the point is she never gave up. I specifically remember her always teaching me little things such as folding clothes, cleaning up after ourselves, and being respectful towards adults. At times she could be bossy and I thought that she was the grumpiest person alive with no sense of humor, but as I matured more it made sense that she was only trying to direct me from making the same mistakes she made. The father of the baby turned out to be a guy she liked ever since she was 15. His name is Richard, and turns out he was a drug dealer. A couple months before my sister would go into labor, he got busted and went to jail for 8 years. During that time, my sister never had a single day where she didn't think of him, but now that she had a kid, she knew she had to do everything for her kid's best interest. She visited him occasionally, mostly for her daughter though. One of those 8 years, she met another. They dated for about a year, but deep down I know that she always would be emotionally attached to Richard, and even at such a young age of 8 I could see that. During the time she spent with Dan, she realized that he wasn't the type of guy she was looking for and because of that and other ordeals, she broke up with him and continued to be single. She bought her own triplex and made an investment, while still doing the best she could for her daughter. When Richard returned from prison, he was proud of all her accomplishments and what she had done for his daughter. Again seeing him as a drug dealer at first glance doesn't seem like a great sounding guy, but from what I realized, you really do need to hear what the person has to say from their perspective. He lived in the poor villages of China, and had a heck of a time traveling to America to get away from the Communist country that China is. Richard is one of the most sincere, dedicated people I know who would do anything for his family. He always thinks of others and has a compassion to help people out. Of course he learned that drug dealing isn't the right path to take, and he learned from that as well. Him and my sister are the hardest workers of all people I can think of. Many people stereotype my family, and we learned that you just have to do what's best for you and ignore them. Many people in the world are going to judge you, weather they have a reason or not. It's up to you to be strong not only for yourself, but so you can be a role model for others around you.
My sister is one of the most independent girl, women, female I know. She thinks of her family and loved ones and how her choices may affect her future. Although she had her ups and downs, which are far more drastic than the average sister, it only made her stronger. I look highly to her for never giving up. It may seem like she got lucky with the lottery as some people would say, but she earns every cent she makes and still manages to make time for her kids without spoiling them. I hope she knows that I watch her everyday because she inspires me. I love my sister and I couldn't ask for a better one. I don't know what i'd do without her, or where I'd be. She raised me when my mom left to be Seattle because of a major accident and I've learned so much responsibility from her. Discipline, attentiveness, and promptness, and self respect. It's hard to keep up in school in the situation i'm in right now, but I just have to remember not to let my guard down and keep pushing myself because the only way to get pass everything is by continuing to keep trotting along. Don't dwell too much in what people say about you because they don't know any better obviously. People will talk about you your whole life. You can't be too trusting because they're those people who will take advantage of that and what you have. I learned that you have to open your eyes and find the people that are worth trusting, and they're those people out there. I've learned friends come and go, as well as relatives. If you hold on too much it'll just hurt you even more later on. The only person who truly knows you is yourself, so make the outcome of your decisions what you think is best for you without giving up no matter how hard it may seem.
Boldness
Boldness takes a step out of his 1940 Rolls Royce Phantom onto the obnoxious city streets of New York City and inhales a deep fresh of breath air in. "That feels nice and refreshing," stated Boldness as he continued along with his task. Wearing a black business suit, hair combed back with a light hint of men's cologne just enough not to make you faint, he strutted the streets as if they were his own. With his briefcase containing important paperwork in his left hand, and his white iPhone 4 in the right, he walked into the building. "I'd like a chocolate caramel macchiato with extra whip cream and sprinklings! Oh and make that low-fat as well," he blurted out before even considering the line of people behind him who were all waiting before him. The cashier working at StarBox Coffee Shop was a teen in her prime years of about 20. "I'm sorry you'll have to wait just like everyone else, the line ends back there," as she pointed across the room. Boldness had never had anyone reject his orders, and with that said, he left the building. He couldn't believe what had just happened to him. Hopping back into the Phantom, he began to feel a gut feeling inside of self-reproach. Never had he experienced anything like this at all, it was such an unusual feeling, as if he had done something wrong. Before starting his car, Boldness went back inside StarBox only to apologize for his ill-mannered ways. Everyone accepted his apology with applauses, and some even came to shake his hand. By now, everyone had received their coffee which left an opportunity for Boldness. Walking up to the front of the cashier he politely asked, "May I please have a non-fat chocolate caramel macchiato with extra whip cream and sprinkles?" "You sure can! Thanks for waiting." In no time at all, he was handed his coffee he had been waiting all morning for. Walking out of the building for the second time that day, he had another odd feeling. A great feeling of satisfaction. That day Boldness learned that patience was the key.
What's in my bag?
In my satchel, I carry a USB drive, a pair of gloves, a bag of make-up, my community service papers for American Government class, my wallet containing much importance such as my driver's license, bank receipts, money, my Fred Meyer reward's card, Denali Alaskan debit card, some change, and other random cards. I also carry a pen/pencil, Carmex(a must), a spare key for my car, and my house key. Of all things, I don't think I could live without my wallet, and carmex :)
Twilight Book Review
Twilight is the story of Edward and Bella’s romance. When I first heard about it I thought it was going to be a boring and unentertaining book. Forget any vampire romance you have read before, Twilight is so unique. The book is mainly aimed at young adult readers but it has the ability to catch anyones age and will satisfy both teenagers and adults alike.
The story is told in first person from the perspective of Bella, so the reader only ever know what she knows, making Edward and his family a mystery that is slowly unravelled through out the book. Even by the end of the book I was still thirsting for more of the Cullen family back story, hopefully their characters might be developed further in future books. Bella herself is a well written and realistic character, shy and lacking in confidence, her sarcastic inner voice narrates the story for the reader. Twilight is simply and yet beautifully written. Stephanie Myers has the ability to really grab ahold of one's mind and wrap them around her fingers. The descriptions of Forks leave you feeling like you can almost smell the damp air and hear the rain falling on the roof, kind of like Juneau.
The romance between Edward and Bella is both touching and compelling. It gives you a sad and touching feeling to their impossible love, yet at the same time they both are unwilling to give up hope that their relationship is not doomed. Theres a drastic change in your mood making the adrenaline increase as Bella and Edward turn into a frantic race to stay alive.
I have heard Twilight described as “a vampire story for people who don’t like vampire stories” and I think I would agree with that. This book really has something for everyone. Young adult readers, vampire fans or romance readers will all find Twilight to be an appealing story It allows the reader to experience a whole new outlook on vampires and how they interact around mankind.
For a Young Adult novel the book is pretty long but don’t let that put you off reading it because each page is to be savoured. The book was so much more than I expected Believe me, i'm not much of a reader but I gave it a chance, and this is one book that you won’t want to end.

Goal Statement
I would like to reach my goal of becoming a Dental Hygienist with an associate's degree. I plan to continue working at the Canton House Restaurant until I graduate to save up as much money as I can. I would like to go on a big trip during the summer before college starts, and see the diverse parts of the world I never was introduced to. I'm planning to do that with my older sister Thuy for the month of June. Then, I hope to attend the University of Alaska Anchorage in the fall of 2012 for a year to finish my prerequisites, which will open the doors into the Dental Hygiene program, leading me one step closer to becoming a Dental Hygienist. After completing my prerequisites at UAA, I then would like to attend the Dental Hygiene Program at Mesa College in Arizona for 2 years to receive my associate's degree. I plan to return to Alaska to start my career and become financially stable and such. After maybe a year or two, I'm considering possibly going back to school and receiving a bachelor's degree in the same field. I hope to take up residence somewhere nice and warm, such as California for instance.
